The photographs we’re featuring here are unusual for a number of reasons: We typically don’t run so many images with an editorial, and we typically don’t feature candidates running for office in districts far beyond our coverage area.
But these photos are unusual for a much bigger reason: These are the women running for Congress in a state that has a terrible track record for female representation. With so many women running, these images represent history in the making for Pennsylvania.

Since she launched her campaign for the state House, Bibiana Boerio (“call me Bibie”) says she has taken only one day off: a Sunday afternoon to watch the Mr. Rogers’ documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor. She’s from Latrobe, Mr. Rogers’ hometown, and the Democratic nominee for the 14th Congressional district said she identifies with his famous “look for the helpers” advice.

We are constituents of the new Pennsylvania 14th Congressional District where Bibiana Boerio and Sen. Guy Reschenthaler are vying for an open seat. We are concerned both about job growth in a strong economy and about preserving Earth’s environment so our children can pursue their dreams in a livable world. One issue that involves both of those goals is the regulation of methane emissions from gas drilling and distribution operations. The natural gas industry provides valuable jobs but methane is a potent greenhouse gas.

United Mine Workers of America (UMW)’s National Council of the Coal Miners Political Action Committee (COMPAC) unanimously voted to endorse Bibiana Boerio, the Democratic candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 14 th District. The action was taken upon the recommendation of the Pennsylvania State Council of COMPAC.

Boerio’s Efforts Led to Renaming a Local Pennsylvania Post Office after Tuskegee Airman Luther Smith
The son of a Pennsylvania Tuskegee Airman, Gordon Smith, wrote the following open testimony regarding Bibiana Boerio’s efforts to get a local U.S. Post Office named after his father, Luther Smith, in honor of his service as Tuskegee Airman. Luther Smith was awarded the Medal of Honor by the Daughters of the American Revolution 10 years ago today, on July 11, 2008 as well as the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007.
