Latrobe, PA; August 30, 2018 – The AFT Pennsylvania has endorsed Democrat Bibiana Boerio to represent Pennsylvania’s 14th Congressional District, citing her strong background in education and support for professional and educational opportunities for all. This endorsement joins those received from the National Education Association and the AFL-CIO.

“AFT Pennsylvania is proud to support individuals who will fight for the needs of our educators, schools and students – Bibiana Boerio is one of those people, and we are thrilled to endorse her today,” said Ted Kirsch, President, AFT Pennsylvania. “Bibie has a strong record of support for teachers, students and the institutions that enable them to thrive. She will uphold our values in Congress, and we look forward to sending her there following a November victory.”

“As someone who firmly believes in investing in our schools and educators to help pave the way to economic success, I am honored to receive this endorsement,” said Bibiana Boerio, Democratic nominee for PA-14. “I grew up in a union household and I strongly believe that all Americans deserve a sound, quality education. Educators are a critical component of that and, in supporting our teachers and public schools, we will be supporting our students and building a stronger future for our communities. Many members of my family are teachers and I know the commitment they have to each of their students.”

Boerio supports accessible education at all levels. “Lifelong learning opens doors. We should be looking at education as an investment in our futures. This means supporting our public schools and higher education. This means investing in preschool programs for underserved populations. It means opportunities for technical training for students seeking career skills. It should mean classes for adults who want to get current in technology and to learn new life skills.

But the current secretary of education has set us back in many areas. Her actions are destroying our educational institutions. We need people in Washington who will question the actions of the current administration—and every administration—to ferret out good ideas and reject those that do not benefit the American people.

AFT Pennsylvania is a union of professionals that champions fairness, democracy, economic opportunity, and high-quality public education, healthcare and public services for students, their families and our communities. The organization is committed to advancing these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through the work of its members.
